Work Experience

Enquiries about work experience, work placement or voluntary work will be welcomed after 1st October 2010. Until then we do not have any opportunities unless specifically advertised. We always prefer to hear from students themselves, if at all possible, rather than their family members or guardians.

Project Curator (Redevelopment of Egypt and Sudan Galleries)

Salary Grade 7: £28,983 p.a. - £ 35,646 p.a. Fixed Term Contract until January 2012

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Curator to work closely with colleagues to develop the interpretive scheme and design of the new Egyptian and Nubian Galleries.

To succeed, you will have a postgraduate university degree in Egyptology as well as a broad knowledge of the prehistory, history, material culture and languages of Ancient Egypt. In addition you will have recent experience in developing museum gallery displays as well as being a first class communicator with people from all walks of life. You will have worked in a museum before, holding a position of some responsibility. Computer literate, you will have some experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team as well as the ability to provide leadership and support to others.

Visitor Services Assistants (Full-Time)

£7.11 per hour

The refurbished Ashmolean Museum opened to the public in November 2009.

We now have a number of exciting opportunities to join our Front of House team.

Help us to make sure our visitors enjoy an experience that exceeds their expectations, as well as playing your part in helping to protect our priceless collections and our stunning new building.

You’ve probably been working in a busy catering, retail or customer services environment, or similar. A team player, you’ll have some knowledge of basic security procedures and health and safety requirements in a public environment.

You’ll need to have first class communication skills and enjoy using them! Nothing will be too much trouble for you. You’ll also have a confident and pro-active approach to dealing with problems and issues as well as a positive approach and a desire to gain knowledge of the Museum and the City, and promote this to our visitors. You will be willing to work evening, weekend and bank holiday shifts when required. As a casual worker you will be available to work more than 16 hours a week.

These posts do not meet the minimum requirements for work permit employment, we can therefore only accept applications from those who can prove their eligibility to work in the UK.

The Christensen Fellowship in Chinese Painting

£28,983 p.a. – £35,646 p.a.

The Ashmolean Museum re-opened to the public almost one year ago, following a hugely exciting redevelopment. The Christensen Fellowship is an endowed post-doctoral fellowship associated with the Khoan and Michael Sullivan Gallery of Chinese painting. The Christensen Fellow will be expected to undertake new research in the field of Chinese painting, with a view to publication.

A confident communicator with good presentation skills, you will have a sound knowledge of the Chinese language, hold a doctoral degree in Chinese art or be on the point of completing a doctoral thesis. Experience of curatorial work will be an advantage. This post is offered on a two year contract.
