Brooking's success dated from 1754, when he presented a huge sea piece to the Foundling Hospital in London and was elected a Governor and Guardian. He specialised in marine paintings, revealing in his detailed depictions his intimate knowledge of all aspects of ships and maritime life. His works are difficult to date, but this example may be comparatively early.
